The Department of Mathematics
at NDSU is happy to announce the
start of the fifth annual North Dakota Mathematics Talent Search.
The goals of the talent search are to locate high school students in
North Dakota with a talent for solving mathematical problems, to
reward these students for their efforts, and to encourage these
students to attend NDSU and major in the mathematical sciences or
engineering.
The Talent Search poses three sets of challenging mathematics
problems throughout the year. The problems will have a range of
difficulty. Many students will be able to solve most of the
problems; others may find these problems very difficult. Finding a
good solution to any problem is always an achievement. Interested
students are encouraged to send in solutions even if they only solve
one problem in a set. In fact, we do not anticipate that many
students, if any, will be able to solve all of the problems in every
set. The problems do not require advanced mathematical knowledge --
just talent in problem solving.
The 2003-2004 Talent Search was organized by Dr. Martin
Juras. Professors Jorge
Calvo, Jim
Coykendall, Fred Haring (Emeritus), Ken
Johnson, Isaac
Kornfeld, Bill
Martin, and other members of the Department of Mathematics
also contribute by suggesting problems and solutions and by
assisting with the scoring.
