Abstract: A big part of mathematics is finding patterns among things that seem very different on the surface. In this talk, we will introduce the ideas of groups and rings, structures that play a large role in many areas of mathematics and are basic building blocks of more complex structures. We will review many examples of groups and rings, and discuss some applications.
