Abstract: If you are on the Math Club mailing list, this more than likely means that you like math (at least a little). Oftentimes folks find themselves attracted to mathematics only to find themselves chuckled at by their friends and family. ("Math?!? What are you going to do with that???)
This short talk will give my personal perspective on the importance of a degree in mathematics, and perhaps more importantly, what can be done with it once you have finished school. I will tell you a bit about my own experiences and the experiences of some folks that I know. Perhaps many of you will be surprised to find the utility of a math major (and I would challenge anyone to find a major that is more versatile).
The theme of this talk will be highly informal and questions/comments are encouraged (the aim of this talk will be both to highlight some "math major options" in life and to give information to help those of you thinking about majoring or minoring in mathematics). There should be stuff in this discussion of value to "veteran" majors as well as folks who are still on the fence.
