Text: J.A. Calvo, Math 491: Capstone Seminar (Available at the Varsity Mart)

Objective: Students will learn how to write documents in LaTeX, and will write an expository or research paper under the supervision of one or more advisors. An essential requirement is that the topic chosen for each paper is in an area of Mathematics and it is not covered by the undergraduate curriculum at NDSU. Each topic must be approved by the Seminar Coordinator in advance.

Attendance and Activities: The students are expected to attend all seminars. Since the primary mean of communication outside of the classroom will be by e-mail, the students are expected to promptly read (and reply to, when necessary) all the messages regarding the seminar. We may ocassionally need to meet (especially at the beginning of the semester) in the Mathematics Department Computer Lab. Each student is required to give a public oral presentation on their paper toward the end of the semester.

Important Dates:

- Monday, February 4: Name of Faculty Advisor, topic, together with a short description (at least 1 page, including the Bibliography, typewritten in LaTeX) of the proposed content of your paper due at 4:00 pm. Please note that this DEADLINE will be strictly enforced .

- Monday, March 17: The paper is due at 4:00 pm (6-15 pages, including the Bibliography). It must be endorsed by the Faculty Advisor. Please note that this DEADLINE will be strictly enforced.
You will get your paper back, along with a list to corrections to be made. Please see below the deadline for submitting the corrected paper.

- Monday, April 21: Oral presentations, 4:00 pm-4:50 pm in Minard 208.

- Monday, April 28: Corrected Final Manuscripts (ready to be submitted to the printer) due at 4:00 pm. Please note that this DEADLINE will be strictly enforced .

Grading: Students who meet ALL of the above deadlines, give their oral presentation, and submit a final manuscript which is deemed acceptable by the seminar coordinator can expect to receive an A. All others will receive a lower grade, depending on their overall participation in the seminar. The oral presentation and timely submission of an acceptable final manuscript are mandatory for passing MATH 491; students who do not complete either of these requirements will receive an F.

ACADEMIC HONESTY: All work in this course must be completed in a manner consistent with NDSU University Senate Policy, Section 335: Code of Academic Responsibility and Conduct

SPECIAL ACCOMMODATIONS: The Americans with Disabilities Act requires that reasonable accommodations be provided for students with disabilities or other special needs. Students eligible for special accommodations are strongly encouraged to share their concerns or requests with me at the beginning of the semester, or as soon as possible thereafter. I will be happy to make appropriate arrangements.

You are welcome to discuss with me any questions or concerns about the seminar during my office hours or by appointment.
