Mathematics 101: Elementary Algebra

3 (Note: This course does not satisfy any requirements for graduation.)

Prerequisites:

None or math placement test score. This course if for students with little or no background in algebra. Offered only through Continuing Ed. Special Fee Required.

Course Description:

Topics include fundamental operations with polynomials, fractions, exponents and radicals; and the process of factoring polynomials, as well as solving equations.

Statement of Purpose and Goals:

Students will develop an understanding of the basic algebraic tools and problem-solving skills necessary for success in the study of Intermediate Algebra (Math 102). In conjuction with Math 102, this course is part of an algebra sequence in preparation for College Algebra (Math 103) and/or Finite Math (Math 104).

Course Outline:

Algebraic expressions - operations of real numbers, fraction and exponential notation, order of operations (2 weeks).

Equation and inequality solving - addition and multiplication principals, formulas, percent applications, inequality applications (2 weeks).

Graphing linear equations - reading and scaling graphs, plotting points, graphing x and y intercepts and lines, rates, slope-intercept and point- slope form (2 weeks).

Polynomials - exponents, adding and subtracting polynomials, multiplication and division of polynomials, polynomials in several variables, scientific notation (3 weeks).

Factoring polynomials - factoring trinomials, difference of squares, sums or differences of cubes and solving polynomial equations by factoring (3 weeks).

Rational Expressions - multiplying, dividing, adding, and subtracting rational expression (2 weeks).
